The Arulmigu Patteeswarar Swamy Temple at Perur, located about 9 kilometres west of Coimbatore on the banks of the Noyyal River, is one of the most ancient and revered Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu. The temple is believed to have been originally constructed by the Chola king Karikala Chola in the 2nd century CE, making it over 2,000 years old. It is one of the seven Kongu Sivalayams — the seven sacred Shiva temples of the Kongu region. The presiding deity, Patteeswarar (Shiva), and his consort Pachainayaki (Parvati), are enshrined here on a Swayambhu Lingam. The temple gained further patronage from the Imperial Cholas, the Hoysalas, Vijayanagara kings, and the Madurai Nayaks over successive centuries. Notable saints and poets, including Arunagirinathar and Kachiappa Munivar, have sung the glory of this shrine. The Kanaka Sabha within the temple features a golden statue of Nataraja, and the stone ceiling is adorned with a rare network of carved stone chains. The temple is a Tevaram Paadal Petra Sthalami — a sacred site celebrated in the Tevaram hymns of the Nayanmars. It is also associated with the legend of Kamadenu, the divine cow, and the sage Patanjali, and is considered a Mukti Sthala (place of liberation).
