Historical Significance

Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar (1 September 1896 – 16 October 1974) was one of the greatest Carnatic vocalists of the 20th century, born in Chembai village near Kottayi, Palakkad, Kerala. Known simply as Chembai or Bhagavathar, he made his public debut at the age of nine and went on to become one of the most revered names in classical Indian music. A devout follower of Lord Guruvayurappan, he initiated the Chembai Sangeetholsavam, an annual Carnatic music festival at the Guruvayur Temple that continues to this day as one of the largest classical music gatherings in India. His students included legendary musicians such as K.J. Yesudas, T.V. Gopalakrishnan, and P. Leela. Chembai composed around 155 kritis in Malayalam, Tamil, and Sanskrit, and his mellifluous voice and devotional depth left a lasting legacy. He was a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and other national honours. His birthplace, Kottayi near Palakkad, lends this PPC its historical significance as a tribute to the maestro's connection to this region.
