The Nataraja sculpture at Badami, Karnataka, is one of the most celebrated examples of Chalukya-era rock-cut art, housed in Badami Cave Temple No. 1 (dedicated to Lord Shiva). This magnificent carving depicts Shiva as Nataraja — the Lord of the Cosmic Dance (Tandava) — with 18 arms, each holding symbolic attributes, representing the rhythm of the universe, the cycle of creation and destruction. Badami, ancient capital of the Chalukya dynasty (6th–8th centuries CE), is famed for its series of four cave temples carved out of red sandstone cliffs overlooking the Agastya lake. The Badami Cave Temples are among the finest surviving examples of early Chalukyan art, showcasing the artistic mastery and religious vision that later inspired later Deccan temple traditions. The Nataraja at Badami is considered a masterpiece of Indian rock sculpture.
