Kalaburagi (formerly Gulbarga) is a historically significant city in northern Karnataka with deep medieval heritage. The Bara Gazi Toph, meaning 'Twelve-Cubit Cannon', is one of the largest surviving medieval cannons in India, located within the Kalaburagi Fort complex. The Bahmani Sultanate, which ruled this region from the 14th to 15th centuries, made Gulbarga its capital, and the city flourished as a centre of Islamic culture, architecture, and learning. The fort and its cannon are important archaeological monuments reflecting the military prowess of the Deccan Sultanates. Kalaburagi is also home to the famous Dargah of Hazrat Khwaja Bande Nawaz, one of the most revered Sufi shrines in India.
