This is a Permanent Pictorial Cancellation (PPC) issued by Visakhapatnam Head Office, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, PIN 530001. The design depicts the Dolphin's Nose Lighthouse, a well-known coastal landmark situated on a rocky headland at the entrance to the Visakhapatnam harbour. The cancellation was first introduced on 10 April 1982. It has since been removed from active service.
Dolphin's Nose is a dramatic rocky promontory that juts into the Bay of Bengal at the southern end of Visakhapatnam's coastline. The lighthouse perched on this headland has guided ships safely into the harbour for well over a century. The name comes from the shape of the rock formation itself, which bears a resemblance to the snout of a dolphin when viewed from the sea. Visakhapatnam, historically known as Vizag, has been a strategic naval and commercial port since the British colonial era, and the Dolphin's Nose lighthouse played a key role in supporting maritime navigation along the eastern coast of India. The Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy is headquartered here, and the city remains one of India's most important ports. The lighthouse and its distinctive rocky setting have become iconic symbols of Vizag, frequently appearing in tourism imagery and local cultural identity.
