This is a Special Cancellation issued by Mumbai Head Office, Mumbai, Maharashtra, PIN 400001, on 2 September 2023. The design depicts the Aditya-L1 spacecraft with its solar panels deployed alongside a stylized representation of the Sun. The cancellation commemorates the launch of Aditya-L1, India's first space-based solar observatory mission, and includes bilingual Hindi and English text describing it as the first space-based solar mission from India.
Aditya-L1 is India's first dedicated solar mission, launched by ISRO on 2 September 2023 aboard a PSLV-C57 rocket. The spacecraft is positioned in a halo orbit around the Lagrange Point 1 (L1) between the Earth and the Sun, about 1.5 million kilometres from Earth. From this vantage point, it can observe the Sun continuously without any eclipses, making it ideal for studying solar phenomena such as coronal heating, solar wind, solar flares, and space weather. The mission carries seven scientific payloads, including the Visible Emission Line Coronagraph (VELC), which was developed by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. Understanding the Sun's behaviour is critical not just for astronomy but also for protecting Earth's satellites and power grids from solar storms. India Post released this special cancellation on the very day of the launch, reflecting the national importance of the mission and ISRO's growing stature in global space exploration.
