This is a Special Cancellation issued by Raipur Head Office, Raipur, Chhattisgarh, PIN 492001, on 9 August 2024, coinciding with the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. The design features Baiga Tribal Artistry, showcasing the traditional art form of the Baiga people, an indigenous community native to the forests of central India. The Baiga are one of India's particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTGs), living primarily in the forests of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand. They have a rich tradition of artistic expression, including tattooing, body painting, and intricate wall murals, which are deeply connected to their beliefs, nature worship, and community rituals. The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, observed on 9 August each year, was established by the United Nations in 1994 to raise awareness about the rights and cultures of indigenous communities worldwide. India Post issued this special cancellation from Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh, a state with a significant indigenous population, to honour the cultural heritage of the Baiga people and draw attention to their unique artistic traditions. The Baiga's art forms are increasingly being recognised for their heritage value and have gained visibility through craft fairs and cultural programmes.
