This is a Special Cancellation issued by Bannerghatta Post Office, Bannerghatta, Karnataka, PIN 560083, on 16 July 2025, coinciding with World Snake Day. The circular cancellation design features a cobra coiled around a globe, with the text 'World Snake Day' in English and 'विश्व सर्प दिवस' in Hindi around the border. The cancellation was applied on an Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav postcard bearing the Atal Bihari Vajpayee commemorative stamp.
World Snake Day is observed on 16 July each year to raise awareness about snake conservation and the important role that snakes play in maintaining ecological balance. India is home to over 300 species of snakes, of which around 60 are venomous. Despite their ecological importance as predators that control rodent populations and as prey for larger animals, snakes are widely misunderstood and often persecuted due to fear and superstition. Bannerghatta, where this cancellation was issued, is home to the Bannerghatta Biological Park and National Park near Bengaluru, which is a major centre for wildlife conservation in Karnataka. The cobra depicted in the cancellation design is one of India's most culturally significant animals, featuring prominently in Hindu mythology and ritual, and is also listed among the four most medically important venomous snakes in India. This cancellation highlights the importance of public education around snake ecology and conservation.
