Historical Significance

Vellore Fort is one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture in South India, built primarily by the Vijayanagara Empire in the 16th century. The fort is renowned for its large, well-preserved granite walls, broad moat filled with water (a rare and significant defensive feature), and the elegant Jalakandeswarar Temple within its precincts. The fort later served as a key military installation under Bijapur Sultanate, Maratha, Mughal, and British rule. It is also the site of the 1806 Vellore Mutiny, one of the first instances of a large-scale Indian revolt against British rule. The fort is now a protected monument maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. India Post introduced the Vellore Fort Sub Post Office PPC in 2017 to highlight the heritage significance of this iconic monument.
