This is a Special Cancellation issued by Raipur Head Post Office, Chhattisgarh, PIN 492001, dated 30 January 2025. The circular cancellation design features a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi alongside a map of Chhattisgarh with Dhamtari marked, and the text 'Kandel Canal Satyagraha' (in Hindi and English). Applied on an 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' postcard bearing an Atal Bihari Vajpayee commemorative stamp. Issued to mark Martyrs' Day (30 January), the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
The Kandel Canal Satyagraha (Kandel Nahar Satyagraha) of 1920 was a landmark peasant resistance movement in Dhamtari Tehsil, Chhattisgarh (then Central Provinces). Farmers at Kandel village protested against the British colonial administration's forced irrigation levies on canal water and false accusations of water theft. The agitation, led by nationalist leaders including Pandit Sunderlal Sharma, resulted in the British authorities backing down even before Mahatma Gandhi's scheduled visit to the area in December 1920. It is regarded as one of the first successful Gandhian-style satyagrahas in Chhattisgarh and a significant precursor to the Non-Cooperation Movement. This special cancellation commemorates the 105th anniversary of this historic movement.
