Dr Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai (1919–1971) is widely regarded as the father of the Indian space programme. Born in Ahmedabad into the prominent Sarabhai industrial family, he founded the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 1969 and was instrumental in establishing India's first rocket launching station at Thumba, near Thiruvananthapuram. Under his visionary leadership, India launched its first satellite, Aryabhata, and pioneered the use of space technology for development and education. He also established the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad and contributed greatly to atomic energy research. This cancellation, issued on the first death anniversary in 1972, honours his extraordinary legacy in science and national development.
