This is a Special Cancellation issued by Mumbai Head Office, Mumbai, Maharashtra, PIN 400001, on 23 August 2023. The design features the Chandrayaan-3 Lander-Vikram and commemorates the historic successful soft landing of the spacecraft on the South Polar region of the Moon. The cancellation was applied on an Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav postcard and includes bilingual text in Hindi and English describing the mission achievement.
Chandrayaan-3 was India's third lunar exploration mission and a landmark moment in the country's space history. Launched by ISRO on 14 July 2023, the mission aimed to demonstrate a safe and soft landing on the lunar surface. On 23 August 2023, the Vikram lander touched down near the Moon's south polar region, making India the first country in the world to achieve this feat. The Pragyan rover was subsequently deployed to explore the lunar terrain. The mission was particularly significant not just for India but for global science, as the south polar region of the Moon is believed to hold water ice deposits, making it a key focus for future exploration and potential human habitation. India Post issued this special cancellation on the very day of the landing, celebrating the achievement from Mumbai, reflecting the national pride that the mission generated across the country.
