This is a Special Cancellation issued by Mumbai Head Office, Mumbai, Maharashtra, PIN 400001, on 24 August 2023. The design features the Chandrayaan-3 Pragyan Rover and marks the successful deployment of the rover on the surface of the Moon, one day after the historic soft landing of the Vikram lander. The cancellation was applied on an Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav postcard with bilingual Hindi and English text describing the mission milestone.
The Pragyan rover was a six-wheeled solar-powered robotic vehicle that formed the payload of the Chandrayaan-3 Vikram lander. After the successful soft landing on 23 August 2023, Pragyan was deployed on 24 August and began traversing the lunar surface near the south pole, collecting data on soil composition, temperature, and other physical properties. This made India only the fourth country to successfully land on the Moon, and the first to do so at the south polar region. The rover operated for about 14 Earth days (one lunar day) before entering sleep mode. The data gathered by Pragyan on the presence of sulphur, iron, oxygen, and other elements in the lunar regolith near the south pole has contributed significantly to global scientific understanding of the Moon. This special cancellation commemorates the rover's deployment, issued by India Post as a mark of the nation's pride in ISRO's achievement.
