Historical Significance

World Sparrow Day is observed on 20 March each year to raise awareness about the decline of house sparrow populations in urban and rural areas around the world. The day was first observed in 2010, following an initiative by the Nature Forever Society of India in collaboration with international organisations. The house sparrow (Passer domesticus) was once one of the most common birds in Indian cities, but its numbers have fallen sharply due to urbanisation, loss of nesting sites, reduced availability of food, and the proliferation of mobile towers. In many parts of India, the sparrow has now become a symbol of concern for urban biodiversity. India Post's cancellation from Raipur commemorating this day reflects the growing awareness about avian conservation, and Chhattisgarh, with its rich forest cover and biodiversity, is particularly well-placed to champion such causes.
