This is a Special Cancellation issued by Thrissur Head Office, Thrissur, Kerala, PIN 680001, on 21 June 2025, coinciding with World Music Day. The circular cancellation design features traditional Indian musical instruments including a tabla, a flute, and a mridangam, with the text 'World Music Day' in English and 'विश्व संगीत दिवस' in Hindi. The cancellation was applied on a '75 Years of Samvidhan' postcard bearing the Atal Bihari Vajpayee commemorative stamp.
World Music Day, also known as Fete de la Musique, was born in France in 1982 and is now celebrated in over 120 countries on 21 June each year, coinciding with the summer solstice. The event celebrates music as a universal language that transcends cultures and borders, with both professional and amateur musicians performing in public spaces free of charge. Thrissur, where this cancellation was issued, holds special significance in the world of Indian classical music. It is home to the Sangeet Natak Akademi-recognised Thrissur Sangeetha Nadaka Academy and the Thrissur Pooram, one of the most spectacular temple festivals in India, renowned for its percussion ensembles and traditional music. Kerala itself has a rich tradition of classical and folk music, including Carnatic music, Sopana Sangeetham, and a variety of percussion arts such as Chenda Melam. The choice of instruments in the cancellation design, especially the mridangam and tabla, reflects India's diverse classical music heritage.
