This is a Permanent Pictorial Cancellation (PPC) issued by Gariaband Post Office, Gariaband, Chhattisgarh, PIN 493889. The large circular cancellation design features a Wild Buffalo (जंगली भैंसा), the state animal of Chhattisgarh, depicted in full stride. The cancellation includes the text 'Wild Buffalo' in English and 'जंगली भैंसा' in Hindi. The impression shown here is dated 3 March 2025 and was applied on an Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav postcard.
The Wild Buffalo (Bubalus arnee), locally known as 'Jungali Bhensa' in Hindi, is the state animal of Chhattisgarh and one of the largest bovid species in the world. India is home to one of the last remaining populations of wild buffalo, with Chhattisgarh's forests, particularly in Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve, being a stronghold for the species. The wild buffalo is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, threatened primarily by habitat loss, hunting, and hybridisation with domestic buffalo. Gariaband district, from which this PPC was issued, falls in the forest belt of central Chhattisgarh and is part of the region where wild buffalo sightings have been recorded. This PPC is a part of India Post's tradition of issuing permanent pictorial cancellations depicting the natural heritage and wildlife of specific regions, recognising the wild buffalo's ecological and cultural significance in Chhattisgarh.
