Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force became the first Indian to travel to the International Space Station as part of the Axiom Mission 4 (AX-4) in 2025, which also made him the second Indian to travel to space after Rakesh Sharma in 1984. The mission launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and docked with the ISS, where Shukla conducted scientific experiments including research on muscle loss in microgravity, a field with relevance to ISRO's long-term human spaceflight ambitions.
