Historical Significance

Thrissur Pooram is one of the most spectacular temple festivals in India, held annually at Vadakkunnathan Temple in Thrissur, Kerala. The festival was started in the late 18th century by Sakthan Thampuran, the Maharaja of the erstwhile Kochi state, and is renowned for its magnificent display of caparisoned elephants (as many as 30 on each side), traditional percussion music (Panchavadyam), and colourful umbrella exchanges (Kudamattam). The festival typically takes place in the Malayalam month of Medam (April-May). Thrissur Head Post Office introduced this Permanent Pictorial Cancellation in 1992 to honour the cultural significance of the Thrissur Pooram, one of Kerala's most celebrated festivals.
