Historical Significance

The Maria (also known as Muria Gond or Bison Horn Maria) is an indigenous tribal community from the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, known for their unique cultural practices including the traditional bison horn headdress worn during ritual dances and festivals. Jagdalpur is the headquarters of Bastar district, one of the regions with the highest concentration of tribal communities in India. India Post's Permanent Pictorial Cancellation from Jagdalpur HO, issued in 2025, commemorates the cultural heritage of the Maria Tribe, as part of India Post's ongoing recognition of India's tribal and indigenous communities through philatelic artifacts.
