Historical Significance

The Asiatic Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus venaticus) is critically endangered and functionally extinct in India, with the last confirmed sightings in India dating to 1947. Baikunthapur, in Koriya district of Chhattisgarh, is associated with forested wildlife corridors in northern Chhattisgarh. India introduced African cheetahs to Kuno National Park (Madhya Pradesh) in 2022 under Project Cheetah to reintroduce the species. The issuance of this PPC from Baikunthapur SO on 3 March 2025 reflects both wildlife awareness and the philatelic celebration of India's cheetah reintroduction programme. Koriya district borders Madhya Pradesh and is part of a larger wildlife conservation landscape in central India.
