Sri Gavimath (Gavi Siddeshwar Samsthana) in Koppal, Karnataka, is a prominent Veerashaiva (Lingayat) monastic institution with a history spanning over a thousand years. Founded by H.H. Rudramuni Shivacharya Mahaswamiji, who is said to have meditated in the natural caves (gavi) of the Koppal hills, the math derives its name from these sacred caves. The eleventh pontiff, Sri Gavisiddeshwara Swamiji (originally known as Gudadayya), became the most revered figure of the institution and is believed to have performed numerous miracles, including curing the Nizam of Hyderabad of leprosy, for which the Nizam donated 1,300 acres to the math. The annual Gavisiddeshwara Jathre (fair) held at Gavimath is often called the 'Kumbh Mela of the South', attracting lakhs of devotees. The Samsthana has been instrumental in promoting education, healthcare, and social welfare in the historically underdeveloped Hyderabad-Karnataka region.
