Historical Significance

Nadaprabhu Kempegowda I founded Bengaluru in 1537 CE and built four watch towers at the four corners to demarcate the boundaries of his new city. The Kempegowda Tower at Lalbagh Botanical Garden is one of these four surviving towers. Lalbagh itself is an 18th-century botanical garden laid out by Hyder Ali and later expanded by Tipu Sultan, covering 240 acres and renowned for its rare plants, glasshouse (modelled on London's Crystal Palace), and rock formations. The tower, built in granite in the 16th century, stands as a testament to Kempegowda's vision and is a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India.
