Murudeshwar is a temple town on the coast of Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka, famous for the 123-foot (37.5 m) tall statue of Lord Shiva, one of the tallest in the world. The statue, built in 2008, sits atop Kanduka Hill and can be seen from kilometres away. The site is also home to the ancient Murudeshwara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to Hindu mythology, this is the place where Ravana obtained the Atma Lingam. Murudeshwar is a major religious pilgrimage and tourism centre. Its dramatic coastal setting, with the statue framed against the Arabian Sea, makes it one of Karnataka's most photographed destinations.
