Historical Significance

The Sri Krishna Math (temple) in Udupi, Karnataka is one of the holiest Vaishnava pilgrimage centres in India. Founded by the philosopher-saint Sri Madhvacharya in the 13th century, the temple is famous for its unique tradition of worship. According to legend, the devotee-saint Kanakadasa, who was denied entry to the temple due to caste discrimination, sang so fervently that the temple wall cracked open to reveal Lord Krishna. This opening is now called the Kanakana Kindi (Kanaka's window). The Udupi Krishna temple also gave birth to the famous Paryaya festival, where the head priest changes every two years. The temple is also credited with originating the Udupi cuisine style.
