The Darpana Sundari (Lady with Mirror) is one of the most iconic sculptures of the Hoysala period, adorning the Chennakeshava Temple at Belur in Hassan district, Karnataka. Built by King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE to commemorate his victory over the Cholas, the Chennakeshava Temple took over a century to build and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Darpana Sundari bracket figure shows a woman admiring her reflection in a hand mirror, sculpted with extraordinary detail including intricate jewellery and costume. This sculpture represents the pinnacle of Hoysala craftsmanship and has become an iconic image of Karnataka's cultural heritage.
