Halebidu (formerly Halebid), the ancient capital of the Hoysala Empire, is home to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Hoysaleswara Temple, renowned for its intricate stone carvings. The Natya Saraswati is one of its most celebrated sculptures, depicting Saraswati — the goddess of knowledge, arts, and learning — in a graceful dance pose. The Hoysala sculptors, active between the 10th and 14th centuries, created some of the finest examples of medieval Indian temple art. Halebidu's temples contain over 20,000 sculptures, each carved with remarkable precision in the local chloritic schist stone, which softens after exposure allowing finer detail.
