Rani Abbakka Devi (also known as Abbakka Mahadevi) was the chief of Ullal, a coastal town near Mangaluru, in the 16th century. She became one of India's first freedom fighters, valiantly resisting the Portuguese colonial powers who sought to control India's valuable spice trade routes. Despite multiple Portuguese attacks, she defended Ullal with remarkable courage and military strategy. Abbakka built alliances with other local rulers including the Zamorins of Kozhikode and the Bijapur Sultanate to repel the Portuguese. She is revered as a symbol of bravery and patriotism in Karnataka and is honoured with numerous statues and monuments. She has been named 'Abhaya Rani' (the Fearless Queen).
