Historical Significance

Fort Aguada, built in 1612 by the Portuguese, was one of the most important and well-preserved forts of the colonial era in Asia. It served as a garrison for Portuguese soldiers and as a water storage point for ships replenishing fresh water from the Mandovi River. The lighthouse at Fort Aguada, constructed in 1864, is one of the oldest lighthouses in Asia and guided mariners into the Goa harbour for over a century. The area is also associated with the Aguada Jail, a colonial-era prison. Today, Fort Aguada is a popular heritage and tourist site on the North Goa coastline.
