The Charkha (spinning wheel) was adopted by Mahatma Gandhi as a powerful symbol of Indian self-reliance (Swadeshi) and resistance against British colonial rule. Gandhi promoted hand-spinning as a means for rural Indians to achieve economic independence and reduce dependence on British-manufactured textiles. The Charkha became emblematic of the Indian independence movement and was featured on the original Congress flag before the Ashoka Chakra replaced it. Hasthampatti in Salem district holds cultural significance as a hub of traditional handloom weaving in Tamil Nadu. This cancellation, inaugurated on Gandhi's death anniversary (30 January), pays tribute to his legacy in the textile and freedom movement.
