Permanent Pictorial Cancellation (PPC) issued by Mylapore Head Office, PIN 600004, Chennai District, Tamil Nadu. The cancellation design depicts Punnai (Alexandrian Laurel) leaves and a Peacock, both symbolic of Mylapore's cultural and natural heritage. Introduced in 2026. Status: Active.
Mylapore, one of Chennai's oldest neighbourhoods, derives its name from the Tamil words 'Mayil' (Peacock) and 'Ur' (Town), meaning 'Town of Peacocks'. It is home to the ancient Kapaleeshwarar Temple, believed to be over 1,300 years old, and was once a major port mentioned in early Sangam literature. The Punnai tree (Calophyllum inophyllum), known for its fragrant flowers and medicinal properties, is a coastal species native to South India featured prominently in Tamil poetry as a symbol of beauty and the coastal landscape. Together, the peacock and Punnai motifs celebrate Mylapore's ancient natural and cultural identity.
