The Saraighat Bridge, completed in 1962, was the first bridge built across the Brahmaputra River in Assam and remains one of the most strategically and historically significant bridges in Northeast India. It is both a rail and road bridge, named after the site of the historic Battle of Saraighat (1671), in which the Ahom Kingdom under the military genius Lachit Borphukan decisively defeated the Mughal imperial navy. The bridge played a critical role in integrating the northeastern states with the rest of India and is an enduring symbol of connectivity and Assamese pride and heritage.
